Ephraim Barash

BARASH, EPHRAIM (1892–1943), head of the Judenrat in Bialystok. Barash, who was born in Volkovysk (then Russian Poland), was active from his youth in communal life, in Jewish self-defense, and the Zionist movement. During World War I he was a refugee in Russia. After the war he formed the municipal council of Volkovysk where he became president of the Jewish Trade Bank, a member of the community council, chairman of the local Zionist organization, and honorary chairman of He-Ḥalutz. In 1934 he settled in Bialystok and became general manager of the Jewish community council. When the Germans captured the town at the end of June 1941, Barash was appointed vice chairman of the Judenrat of which he was the guiding spirit. He represented a continuity of leadership of the Council. He organized ghetto life, established industrial enterprises, and, although well aware of German plans concerning the Jews, believed that the Jews would be spared if they could be employed in work essential to the German war effort, a view shared by Mordecai Chaim Rumkowski in Lodz. Cathy Wilkinson Barash

Cathy Wilkinson Barash was born on Long Island, New York in 1949 and spent much of her life there. She is a life-long organic gardener. From childhood she has held firm a belief in economy of space and time in the garden mainly by planting edibles among ornamentals, “so many fruits, vegetables, and herbs are beautiful themselves”—instead of relegating them to the back 40. Anne Raver of The New York Times was the first to call her a “gourmet horticulturist,” as she practices edible landscaping—specializing in edible flowers—and is a gourmet cook. A freelance photographer, writer, designer, and professional speaker, Cathy is best known as the author of "Edible Flowers from Garden to Palate," which Martha Stewart described as "very excellent." Published in 1993, "Edible Flowers" was nominated for a Julia Child Cookbook Award and garnered an Award of Excellence from the Garden Writers Association.

David P. Barash

American psychologist

David P. Barash (born 1946) is professor of psychology emeritus at the University of Washington. He has written, edited or co-authored 40 books, including ones on human aggression, peace studies, and the sexual behavior of animals and people. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Harpur College, Binghamton University, and a Ph.D. in zoology from University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1970. He taught at the State University of New York at Oneonta and then accepted a permanent position at the University of Washington.

His book Natural Selections: Selfish Altruists, Honest Liars and Other Realities of Evolution is based on articles in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Madame Bovary's Ovaries: a Darwinian look at literature, a popular but serious presentation of Darwinian literary criticism, was jointly written with his daughter, Nanelle Rose Barash. He has also written over 230 scholarly articles and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
