An Overview of New Ministry Leaders and Their Family and Business Ties

The single National Assembly vote on Tuesday which solidified Hun Manet’s position as prime minister also ushered in sweeping changes across Cambodia’s top minister roles.

Of Cambodia’s 28 ministries, 20 saw new leaders appointed this week. But Hun Manet’s new cabinet retains intertwined business and family ties — at least eight of the new ministers were related to a minister from the previous cabinet.

As widely expected, the sons of outgoing Interior Minister Sar Kheng and Defense Minister Tea Banh replaced their fathers. Other incoming ministers include Chea Somethy and Sok Soken, children of deceased ruling CPP stalwarts Chea Sim, former senate president, and Sok An, former head of the council of ministers.

The Khmer Rouge^[a] is the name that was popularly given to members of the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK), and by extension to Democratic Kampuchea, which ruled Cambodia between 1975 and 1979. The name was coined in the 1960s by Norodom Sihanouk to describe his country's heterogeneous, communist-led dissidents, with whom he allied after the 1970 Cambodian coup d'état.^[19]

The Kampuchea Revolutionary Army was slowly built up in the forests of eastern Cambodia during the late 1960s, supported by the People's Army of Vietnam, the Viet Cong, the Pathet Lao, and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).^[20]^[21]^[22]^[23] Although it originally fought against Sihanouk, the Khmer Rouge changed its position and supported Sihanouk following the CCP's advice after he wa

THANG Sothea (born in Kompong Cham Province, Cambodia, in 1983) lives and works in Phnom Penh. He is a self-taught artist who started painting in 2009. He graduated from Norton University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Planning and previously worked for an architecture agency in Phnom Penh (2007-2009). In parallel with his artistic career, he continues to work as a freelancer on architectural projects. In 2011-2013, he opened his studio gallery in Phnom Penh, Top Art gallery. In 2015, he opened a small coffee shop and art space in Phnom Penh, TINI Café.
