Sophie Marceau was born Sophie Danièle Sylvie Maupu in Paris, France, to Simone (Morisset), a shop assistant, and Benoît Maupu, a truck driver. She grew up far from the studio spotlights. When she was 14 she was living in the Paris suburb of Gentilly with her father. She learned from friends that director Claude Pinoteau was looking for new faces for a movie about teenagers called The Party (1980). She auditioned for the role, got it, and the film was a success. She played in The Party 2 (1982), then bought back her contract with Gaumont when she was 16 years old for one million French francs. She is a critically acclaimed actress, having received the Cesar for Best Feminine Hope for "La Boum 2" in 1983. She was elected Romantic actress for Chouans! (1988) at the Festival International du Film Romantique (International Festival of Romantic Movie) of Cabourg in 1988, and was awarded the Moliere of the Best Theatrical Revelation for "Eurydice et Pygmalion" in 1994.

Sophie Marceau was born Sophie Daniele Sylvie Maupu, on 17 November 1966 in Paris. Her parents, a shop assistant and a truck driver, divorced when she was nine years old. She was discovered by chance at 14, following a photo shoot for a modelling agency looking for teenage models. Her photos were found by director Francoise Menidrey who was looking for a new teenager for his upcoming project, La Boum, and she was signed to a long-term contract with the Gaumont Film Company.

In 1985, Marceau met director Andrzej Zulawski, and began a relationship which lasted until 2001. They have a son together, Vincent, who was born in 1995. Following her relationship with Zulawski, she was with producer Jim Lemley for six years, with whom she had a daughter, Juliette, in 2002. Between 2007 and 2014 she was in a relationship with actor Christopher Lambert.

Marceau is a classically trained cellist, an author, and a director. She wrote a semi-autobiographical novel, Menteuse, and has directed a number of films including Speak To Me Of Love and Trivial.

Sophie Marceau first found fame when she was plucked from obscurity by director Claude Pinoteau to star in his 1980 teen comedy La Boum. A few years later, at the age of just 16, she picked up a prestigious César award for her performance in the film's sequel, La Boum II. Establishing herself as one of the country's hottest new talents was quite a coup for the young woman, who grew up a truck driver's daughter in the Parisien suburb of Gentilly. The sudden switch from working class schoolgirl to silver screen siren must have come as a shock to the aspiring starlet, but Sophie has never been one to shy away from a challenge.

She tasted controversy at the tender age of 18 when she fell in love with the French-Polish director Andrzej Zulawski.
