Eric Himpton Holder, Jr. (b. January 21, 1951, in New York, New York) is a former United States Attorney General. Holder was sworn into office by Vice President Joe Biden on February 3, 2009. He announced on September 25, 2014, that he would resign as soon as his successor was confirmed by the Senate. At the time of the announcement, Holder was the fourth longest tenured attorney general in United States history.[1] He stepped down from the office on April 24, 2015, after Loretta Lynch was confirmed by the Senate.[2]
Biography
Holder grew up in New York City and graduated from Stuyvesant High School. He then earned his bachelor's degree in American history from Columbia University in 1973 and his law degree from Columbia Law School in 1976. Holder then accepted his first position with the Department of Justice investigating official corruption at all levels of government.[3]

Eric Holder (born January 21, 1951) is an American attorney. He served as the Attorney General of the United States, under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2015. He was the first African-American to hold that post.[2] Before being named as Attorney General, he was the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia under President Clinton[3] and help pick Joe Biden as Obama's running mate.[4] Holder was born in the Bronx.
On September 25, 2014, the Justice Department said Holder would resign as soon as his successor is confirmed.[5] He was succeeded by Loretta Lynch on April 27, 2015.

Holder was always a striver. He was born in the Bronx, raised in Queens and attended the prestigious Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan before going to college and law school at Columbia University. After graduating law school, he moved to the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section, launching a distinguished career that included his appointment to the federal bench by President Reagan; working as a prosecutor and winning convictions against criminals including Rep. Dan Rostenkowski; and returning to the Justice Department, where he served as deputy to Atty. Gen. Janet Reno.
