Toshack commence sa carrière de footballeur au club de sa ville natale (Cardiff City) : il a à peine 16 ans. Il reste quatre ans dans ce club gallois avant que sa carrière ne décolle vraiment. Contacté par le Liverpool FC, il y signe en novembre 1970. Il y reste huit ans et signe la bagatelle de 96 buts sous les couleurs des Reds.

Il gagne d'ailleurs là-bas la plupart de ses trophées avec notamment trois titres de champion d'Angleterre en 1973, 1976 et 1977 mais aussi la FA Cup en 1974, la Coupe UEFA en 1973 et 1976 et pour finir la Coupe d'Europe des clubs champions (Ligue des champions) en 1977 & 1978.

Il est également un pilier de l'équipe du pays de Galles qu'il ne quittera pas, que ce soit en jeunes, en -23 ans puis en A. Il est appelé 40 fois en A, pour douze buts sous les couleurs nationales.

John Benjamin ToshackMBE (born 22 March 1949) is a Welsh former professional football player and manager.

He began his playing career as a teenager with his hometown club Cardiff City, becoming the youngest player to make an appearance for the side when he made his debut in 1965. After establishing himself in the first-team, he went on to make over 200 appearances and scored 100 goals in all competitions after forming a striking partnership with Brian Clark.

In 1970, he joined First Division side Liverpool, where he formed a noted forward partnership with Kevin Keegan and Steve Heighway that helped the club to win two league titles, the European Cup, the UEFA Cup on two occasions, the FA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. His partnership with Keegan was so effective that the two were described as telepathic. Mounting injuries eventually led to him securing his release from Liverpool to join Swansea City as player-manager in March 1978. He led the club to three promotions in four seasons, elevating them from the Fourth Divisi

Born in 1949 and raised in Canton, John Toshack displayed his footballing ability from a young age. As a youth player for Cardiff Boys he impressed with his consistent goalscoring ability, and joined hometown club Cardiff City in 1965

Toshack broke the record for youngest ever player for the Bluebirds when he came off the bench against Leyton Orient in November 1965, being only 16 years and 236 days old. This record was unsurpassed at the club until 2007 when it was broken by Aaron Ramsey, who Toshack would go on to manage on the international stage whilst in charge of the Wales national side. 

The debut against Leyton Orient saw the 16 year old score his first goal for the club, which resulted in the young talent being brought into the regular starting XI by manager Jimmy Scoular. Speaking in 2015, John recalled:
