Court rejects Azath Salleys application seeking release
Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has rejected the application filed by former Governor Azath Sally seeking his release.
The application was taken up before Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala earlier today (Sep. 14).
Salley’s attorney, President’s Counsel Maithri Gunaratna told the court that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), under the directives of the Attorney General, had arrested his client on suspicion of alleged involvement with extremists.
However, the CID has already informed the court that no evidence was found to prove Salley has had links with the suspects of the Mawanella Buddha statue vandalism case, the defence counsel pointed out, seeking the release of his client.
Appearing on behalf of the CID, Senior State Counsel Wasantha Perera informed the court that another case filed against the accused under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and the UN International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) is currently being heard before the Colombo High Court and is schedu

The HonourableMohamed Azath Sanoon Salley (Sinhala: මොහොමඩ් අසාත් සනූන් සාලි) (born 18 September 1963[citation needed]) is a Sri Lankan politician and the eighth Governor of the Western Province.
Salley was the deputy mayor of Colombo in the early 2000s, and was the Acting Mayor of Colombo as well as the founder/leader of the National Unity Alliance (NUA).[1][circular reference]
He has two children, Amina Salley (daughter) and Nafees Salley (son).[2]
In May 2013, Salley was arrested and later released by the Sri Lankan Forces under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) after he supposedly called Muslims to launch an "armed struggle" during an interview.,[3][4] the charges were proven to be baseless and he was acquitted.
Salley founded the National Unity Front, a National political party. He was a member of the Central Provincial Council. He worked in partnership with the United Arab Emirates High Commission in Colombo to help the needy during the Islamic Holy Month of R

Azath Salley makes contradictory statements on Easter attacks
It has been revealed that former Western Province Governor Azath Salley had made contradictory statements on the Easter Sunday terror attacks to the Parliamentary Select Committee and the Presidential Commission Inquiry investigation of the attacks.
Salley yesterday (21) arrived at the Presidential Commission of Inquiry investigating the Easter Sunday terror attacks to testify on the attacks.
The Commission inquired the former Governor of the statement he made before the Parliamentary Select Committee on the matter.
At the Select Committee, Salley stated that one week before the attacks, his personal bodyguard showed him a letter of warning on the attacks and the letter contained the name of Zahran Hashim, the alleged ring leader behind the attacks.
A meeting on the possible attack was held with then-Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, National Intelligence Chief Sisira Mendis and State Intelligence Chief Nilantha Jayawardena, he had testified.
