Earth Day: Artists and the Environment

Earth Day is an annual event held on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. In this article we will take a look at spotlighted artists within our collection whose works or practice are inspired by themes of climate change, the environment and sustainability.

Gone Fishing shows two figures in a small boat in a dark blue sea, holding fishing rods. Three huge fishes and a red hook appear in the sky. This imagery explores the concept that fishing in our oceans has a great impact on the Earth. The placement of fish in the sky creates the awareness that sea life keeps our oceans healthy and provides us with oxygen. Red contrasts against blue tones creating an intensely vibrant daytime scene.

Donna Ong (Chinese: 王美清; pinyin: Wáng Měi Qīng; born 30 July 1978) is a Singaporean artist. She is known for her installation works, which often feature environments created with assemblages, found objects, and sculpture.[1] Her practice draws upon notions of botany, landscaping, and representations of nature in both European and Chinese art.[2][3]

She has exhibited locally and internationally, from the inaugural Singapore Biennale in 2006, the 11th Venice Biennale International Architectural Exhibition in 2008,[1] to the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT9) in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in 2018.[2]

Education and personal life

Donna Ong was born in 1978, daughter of the Singaporean sculptor Michael Ong.[1] Ong attended the Malvern Girls College in Worcestershire, England, now known as Malvern St James. In 1996, Ong began studying the Bartlett Centre in University College London, graduating in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. In 1
