#TBT: Volma Overton, Sr. remembered for his fight to equalize education in Austin

All one has to do is step onto his namesake school in Northeast Austin and Volma Overton's spirit is palpable.

"I would say that his legacy is very strong on our campus," said Volma Overton Early College Prep Principal Courtney Colvin-Crawford.

An Volma Overton statue, Overton murals, his photos and writings, all kept front and center for students.

"When they're in the hallway, the students see the mural. And it's like that father figure was watching over you with pride," saidPrincipalColvin-Crawford.

But Overton's legacy isn't all behind glass cases or on walls. It lives on in the students, their classes and assemblies, with many of Overton's family in attendance.

"We're totally blessed that his children, grandchildren, everyone is still active -- including his church family," said Principal Colvin-Crawford. "It's really is a blessing."
