Matthew Youlden is a language consultant, linguist, lecturer and polyglot hailing from Manchester, England.

Languages have shaped Matthew's entire life, from learning languages together with his twin brother to studying translation studies and linguistics at Humboldt University of Berlin and to working as a professional language consultant and lecturer.

Whilst working as Language Ambassador for the language-learning app Babbel he played a crucial role in promoting the benefits of language learning as well as developing and expanding its platform.

Passionate about all things related to languages and language learning, Matthew has written for publications including The Guardian and The Huffington Post, and makes regular appearances as an expert or guest panelist on television shows, both in Germany and internationally. Just as training with a partner can make it easier to get through your gym routine, studying a language with a partner can make language learning much easier too. And if your language partner knows more than you, or starts making more progress, well, that certainly sets the blood racing! A healthy rivalry is always beneficial to learning languages. Having a competitive partner/friendly rival by your side can make learning lots of fun.

I first realised how vital my brother was to my language learning when we were teens. Our parents had booked a holiday to Portugal, and, anticipating the trip, Matthew and I took out a Portuguese course from our local library. We started learning together, listening to the cassettes whilst sharing the book, and taking turns doing the exercises. A few days into learning Portuguese, I got home after a particularly grueling football practice to discover that Matthew had already completed chapter 4 after basketball practice, heaven forbid! We’re Matthew and Michael Youlden, two identical twin brothers with ginger beards with a passion for all things languages. Languages have shaped our entire lives, from our attempt to learn Spanish at the grand old age of 8 armed solely with a phrasebook and mini dictionary to majoring in linguistics and translation studies at University to working as instructors, language consultants and e-learning experts.

Hailing from Manchester, England, you’d think that we live for tea and scones but, to be honest, we’re not really big fans of either. Languages are what make us get up in the morning (and coffee, or a mug of Cadbury's hot chocolate!)! In fact, we’ve spent the last 25 years dedicating our lives to them. And we’d like to share our love for them with you.
