Seeing the images I had captured earlier in the day come to life in print was a magical experience.” And, in a way, an allegorical fragment of an aspect of his life.
In his 2009 feature-length documentary film Tulku, Gesar details the experiences of five young Western men who were identified in childhood as being tulkus — reincarnated Tibetan Buddhist masters. This subject matter was, is personal to him as, at the age of three, he was enthroned as a tulku in Berkeley, California. The son of a British mother and a Tibetan father — eminent Tibetan Buddhist master Chögyam Trungpa — Gesar was identified as the reincarnation of one of his own father’s teachers. “You’re the reincarnation of your father’s teacher … now what?”

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is pleased to announce the World Premiere of Tulku, an exceptional personal documentary by filmmaker Gesar Mukpo, who was recognized by Tibetan Buddhists as a tulku—a reincarnated Buddhist master.
In many ways, Gesar Mukpo’s life in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is an ordinary one. But, when he was only 3, he became one of the first people born in the West to be recognized as a tulku —a reincarnated Buddhist master.

Gesar Mukpo né le [1] à Boulder dans l'État du Colorado, aux États-Unis, est un cinéaste (acteur, réalisateur, scénariste) fils du maître bouddhiste tibétain Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoché.

[modifier | modifier le code]Gesar Tsewang Arthur Mukpo est le fils de Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoché et de son épouse britannique Diana Judith Mukpo. À trois ans, il fut identifié par Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoché comme la réincarnation de Jamgon Kongtrul de Sechen, l'un des professeurs de son père, mort dans une prison au Tibet vers 1960. Lors de sa visite en 1976 aux États-Unis, le 16e karmapa confirma l'identification et procéda à la cérémonie d'intronisation à Berkeley (Californie)[2]. Gesar Mukpo a vécu à Boulder, dans le Colorado, puis à Halifax, Nouvelle-Écosse au Canada.
Il est le demi-frère d'Ashoka Mukpo[3] et de Sakyong Mipham Rinpoché.
