Mark Freuder KnopflerOBE (born 12 August 1949) is a British musician. He was the lead guitarist, singer and songwriter of the rock band Dire Straits from 1977 to 1995. He pursued a solo career after the band dissolved, and is now an independent artist.

Knopfler was born in Glasgow, and raised in Blyth, near Newcastle. After graduating from the University of Leeds and working for three years as a college lecturer, Knopfler co-founded Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler. The band recorded six albums, including Brothers in Arms (1985), one of the best-selling albums in history. After Dire Straits disbanded in 1995, Knopfler began a solo career, and has produced ten solo albums to date.[1] He has composed and produced film scores for nine films, including Local Hero (1983), Cal (1984), The Princess Bride (1987), Wag the Dog (1997) and Altamira (2016).[2] He has produced albums for Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, a

Mark Knopfler on the end of Dire Straits: ‘Maybe I should have kept playing, let it get as big as Brazil’

Mark Knopfler was never a reluctant rock star. In the glittering, go-go 1980s, he had the time of his life leading Dire Straits to the top of the charts with monster hits such as Money for Nothing and Romeo and Juliet. Over time, though, the novelty wore thin. Once you have sold 100 million records and played 248 concerts in a single year, as Dire Straits did touring their 1985 behemoth Brothers in Arms, the thrill starts to go. He is glad he got off the juggernaut when he did. In the end, megafame was not for him.

“It suits some people. You can get used to the scale of it. I don’t know if I ever really did. What happens there is that the gig becomes an event. There’s a different energy,” he says.

Knopfler is speaking from his home in London, where he is promoting his new solo album, One Deep River. He cuts a cheerful, inquisitive figure: ask him a question and he may (very pleasantly) shoot back with one of his own. There is little of the strutting guitar hero about him: i

The Quiet Man of Rock and Roll who sips tea on stage.

By Bob Tallent

This 63 year old man was born in Scotland and reared in the north east of England.  He founded one of the most innovative and individualistic sounding bands in 1977 with his brother David and is a guitarist, singer, songwriter and record producer.  In his late teens and early 20s, he worked as a reporter, graduated with a degree in English and taught as a lecturer.  While he is left handed, he plays the guitar right handed.  Even though the acoustic guitar is better suited to finger picking, he has perfected it on the electric guitar.  He fingerpicks using a personal variant of the clawhammer style instead of using a plectrum. Fingerpicking is usually associated with acoustic guitar, but this man usually (though not always) plays an electric guitar. He has received 22 awards in his life including an OBE and owns over 70 guitars.  His genres include Rock, Roots Rock, Celtic Rock, Country Rock and Blues Rock.  He is known as the ‘quiet man of rock and roll’, is shy by nature and sips tea on stage.  In addition
