Vernee Christell Watson-Johnson (née Watson; born January 14, 1954) is an American actress, author, and acting coach. Watson-Johnson is best known for her recurring roles as Vernajean Williams on Welcome Back, Kotter (1975–1979) and as Viola "Vy" Smith on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990–1996), playing the mother of Will Smith's character. She's frequently featured as guest star or nurse and has made numerous appearances on Television commercials.
Vernee would portray Elaine, Benson's baby sister, on Season 6 of the ABC sitcom, Benson.

Watson-Johnson is known for her recurring roles as Vernajean Williams on Welcome Back, Kotter (1975–1979), as Viola "Vy" Smith on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990–1996), playing the mother of Will Smith's character[4] and head nurse Gloria Tyler on Bob Hearts Abishola (2019–2024).
