His early life
Public school educated and trained at the Central School Of Speech And Drama, where he developed a taste for fencing, James honed his stage skills with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
His career
He went on to appear in TV costume dramas such as Sharpe's Sword, The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall, The Mayor Of Casterbridge and Beau Brummell: This Charming Man. He lists Maybe Baby, A Knight's Tale and Vanity Fair among his silver screen credits.
His personal life
For 11 years the actor - whose surname originates from the Norman French for 'good faith' shared his life with Cold Feet actress Fay Ripley, and was briefly linked to Gwyneth Paltrow. He has a son, Joseph, from his marriage to Waking The Dead actress Holly Aird. The couple divorced in 2002.

James Brian Mark Purefoy[1] (born 3 June 1964) is an English actor. He played Mark Antony in the HBO series Rome, Nick Jenkins in A Dance to the Music of Time, college professor turned serial killer Joe Carroll in the series The Following, Solomon Kane in the film of the same name, and Hap Collins in the Sundance series Hap and Leonard. Purefoy also played Lord Phillipe de Clermont in the second season of the hit AMC/Netflix series "A Discovery of Witches". In 2018, he starred as Laurens Bancroft in the first season of Altered Carbon, a Netflix original series. Following an uncredited role as V in the 2006 film

Purefoy was an alumnus of one of Ulster’s most venerable and distinguished schools, who went on to become, over a distinguished career, one of Ireland’s leading practitioners in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Richard Dancer Purefoy was of a Tipperary family; he was born in Cloughjordan in that county, fourth son of Dr Thomas Purefoy and Alla Maria Purefoy, daughter of Dr Thomas Dancer of Hilton in the county. Richard was educated for a time at Bective College, Dublin, but latterly boarded at The Royal and Prior School, Raphoe, County Donegal, one of the five Royal Schools in Ulster founded by Royal Charter of King James I in 1608. After Raphoe, in 1867 he entered Trinity College, Dublin winning a Junior Moderatorship in Natural Sciences. He graduated BA in 1871 and that year also obtained the Licentiate in Surgery. In 1872 he progressed MA of Trinity and gained the Licentiate of Apothecaries Hall; in 1875 he was admitted Licentiate of Surgeons in Ireland and took the Fellowship of that College in 1879.
