Sheila E. became one of the top female musicians during the 1980s due to her fierce drumming style and her Latin rhythms. A former protégé of Prince, Sheila became a drummer in his band before branching off into solo musical projects. In addition to being considered the best female drummer alive, Sheila E. has also expanded into acting roles, most notably in the urban cult classic film Krush Groove (1985). She’s co-founder (along with Lynn Mabry) of the "Lil' Angel Bunny Foundation", an organization that "provides abused, abandoned and severely emotionally disturbed children compassionate care by implementing an alternative method of recreational and education therapy through music and the arts and funding special services and programs that assist the needs of these children using these fundamental methods". |

Sheila Cecilia Escovedo (born December 12, 1957), known professionally by her stage name Sheila E., is an American percussionist, singer, author and actress from Oakland, California who became well-known in the 1980s and has continued recording to the present day. She made her recording debut with jazz bassist Alphonso Johnson on his 1976 album Yesterday's Dreams. She is best known for her long association with Prince but has also collaborated with many other musicians. She had played with George Duke, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Herbie Hancock, and Diana Ross by the time she was in her early twenties. In recent years, she has collaborated with George Clinton, Ringo Starr, and Gloria Estefan. Sheila E. is of Mexican, African American, and Creole descent. She is the daughter of percussionist Pete Escovedo, with whom she frequently performs. Her uncle is Alejandro Escovedo, also a musician. Sheila E. (b. 1957) is an American singer and percussionist of Mexican and French Creole ancestry. Sheila Cecelia Escovedo, better known by her stage name Sheila E., was born into a musical family in Oakland, California. She was the first child born to her French Creole mother, Juanita, and her father, Pete Escovedo, a well-known Mexican American jazz percussionist. Her four paternal uncles were also well-known musicians, as was her godfather, Tito Puente. Sheila E. played several instruments as a child. She eventually picked up the drums and has continued with percussion throughout her career. Sheila E.’s career began when, at 15-years old, she filled in on the congas for her father’s Latin-rock-funk band Azteca during their opening slot for the Temptations in San Francisco. Following that performance, she continued to tour with Azteca. After playing for musicians Herbie Hancock and George Duke among others, Sheila E. met Prince backstage at a show.
