Ottavio Missoni (11 February 1921 – 9 May 2013) was a Dalmatian Italian businessman, founder of the Italian fashion label Missoni and an Olympic hurdler who competed in the 1948 Summer Olympics.[3] Along with his wife Rosita, he was part of the group of designers who launched Italian ready-to-wear in the 1950s, thereby ensuring the global success of Italian fashion.[4]

Early life

Ottavio Missoni was born in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on the Dalmatian coast. His mother, Teresa de' Vidovich di Capocesto e Rogoznica, was a Dalmatian Countess while his father, Vittorio Missoni, was a Friulian sea captain who moved to Dalmatia while it was under Austrian rule.[5][6] Through his mother he was a close cousin of Italian politician Renzo de' Vidovich. He was educated in Zadar, Trieste, and Milan.[7]

In 1996, the Missonis transferred control of the business to their three children: Vittorio Missoni became marketing director; Luca (born 1956) menswear designer until 2008; and Angela (born 1958) womenswear designer. Angela Missoni took over menswear in 2008 when Luca became responsible for the archive and events. In May 2021, the company restructured and Angela Missoni stepped down as creative director of men's and women's. Staying on as president, she handed over creative responsibility to her right hand man, design director Alberto Caliri for the interim before naming Filippo Grazioli at creative director of menswear and womenswear.
