ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS: Who were the third and fourth people to ascend Mount Everest successfully?

Swiss mountaineers Ernst Schmied and Jurg Marmet were the third and fourth individuals to ascend Mount Everest successfully. They were members of Albert Eggler’s 1956 Swiss expedition.

In 1952, the Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research (SFAR) in Zurich had mounted a serious assault on Everest. The expedition, led by Edouard Wyss-Dunant, aimed to conquer Everest via the South Col route, pioneering what would become the standard approach to the mountain.

Raymond Lambert and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay made the main attempt on the summit. They reached a height of about 28,200ft, tantalisingly just 800ft from the summit, setting the new altitude record, before being forced to turn back due to exhaustion and worsening weather. Their efforts demonstrated the route’s feasibility and set the stage for Norgay’s eventual success with Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953.
