Jaidene Veda is a Canadian recording artist with five albums under her belt as well as close to 200 collaborations as a featured vocalist over her 20-year career. She is currently working on her sixth album as well as a documentary due to be released in 2021. We sat down virtually to talk about her life and work and the importance of early breast cancer screening.
Daks: Tell me a little about your childhood; where you were born and what music you were listening to growing up.
Veda: I was born in Calgary, a fairly small city in Canada compared to the West and East Coast where I also lived later in life. I grew up in the “Sub-Pop era,” a Seattle-based grunge music record label that really blossomed in the 1990s. Silky, smooth, distinct… after five co-written and self-produced indie albums, two Billboard club singles, and several international chart-topping records including “SUNDAY”, “FLOW”, “SOUL SIZE LOVE” & “BEAUTIFUL” (featuring Grammy nominated Artist, Josh Milan), Jaidene Veda has become a recognizable voice in both the underground house community and top 40 club circuits around the world. Having worked with groundbreaking artists such as Ursula Rucker, Joaquin « Joe » Claussell, Josh Milan ( formerly from Motown Record’s duo « Blaze”), as well as Producers Osunlade, Atjazz, Spinna, Jimpster, Ananda Project, Glen Underground & The Rurals, Veda’s continually maturing sound has been praised as inimitable.
Often described as ‘Bjork meets Sade’, even dubbed a ‘modern-day Tracey Thorn’, NYC’s « GIANT STEP RECORDS » recognized her multiple talents via their ‘Next Step’ contest, and further echoed comparisons to the « Naked Music » era that influenced her from the start.

Under the alias of 'Dub-bode', Jaidene Veda first began producing and promoting Live House events, fusing Jazz horn sections with deep house DJ's and her freestyle vocals. From the Underground club circuit to the Arts Community, Fashion House launches for Holt Renfrew to Canadian Jazz festivals, the self-promoting songstress developed a diverse local audience.
After co-producing her first indie electronica albums, Jaidene was featured on several internationally released 12" singles and CD compilations. Her breakout EP remixed by London's House luminary, Pete Heller, landed a spot on Pete Tong's "Essential Buzz Chart" upon release, and climbed to no.24 after 9 weeks on the Billboard Club Chart. ‘Flow’ had also reached 1 on Beatport Chart, and was recently featured at 5 on Tiesto’s recent Club Play chart for 2008. From Armin Van Buuren to Paul Oakenfold, Markus Schulz, Matt Darey, Paul Van Dyk & Tiesto's continued support…Pete Tong's recent December edition of 'Fast Trax' proves the follow-up to be just as strong
