Dane Rudhyar (March 23, 1895 – September 13, 1985), born Daniel Chennevière, was a French-born American author, modernist composer and humanistic astrologer. He was a pioneer of modern transpersonal astrology.

An astrologer, composer and significant figure in promoting the goals of the New Mexico Transcendental Painting Group (TPG), Dane Rudhyar began his career in France but lived most of his professional life in the United States. His lasting reputation is for being the pioneer of modern trans-personal astrology.

With his extensive writing, he formalized theories behind the non-objective and symbolic expression of the TPG painters. Referencing his relationship to the Transcendental group, he wrote in the preface to his book, "Astrological Insights into the Spiritual Life":

The Parisian Years: 1895-1916

DANE RUDHYARwas born Daniel Chennevière, of Celtic and Norman ancestry, on 23 March 1895 in Paris, France. His birth name was given up in 1917, a few months after reaching New York. He had a sister, lost his father in 1911 and his mother in 1954.
      Rudhyar began playing piano at age seven, and started composing for the piano in 1912. The surgical removal of a kidney at age thirteen exempted him in 1914 from military service, actually saving his life as the regiment he would have joined was completely wiped out in the 1914 French retreat from the Marne. He received a bachelors degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne at age sixteen.

The French-American Daniel Chenneviere was born on 23rd of March 1895 at 0:40 in Paris, and died on 13th of September 1985, shortly after eleven o'clock in the morning in San Francisco, CA.[1]

He came to prominence as one of the leading authors in Spiritual Astrology, as one of the most important astrologers of the 20th century under the pseudonym of Dane Rudhyar[2].

Biography

At the start of the First World War he left his home city of Paris and moved to New York where he immersed himself in Buddhism and other Eastern religions and wisdom teachings. During that time he was also influenced by psychology and Theosophy.

Rudhyar managed an impressive synthesis of astrology, philosophy, psychology and art. He was a painter, composer, lyricist and, during times of financial hardship, an author of science fiction novels. He had to struggle for a long time before he gained recognition for his astrological work, which first really came in the 1960s.
