TUAN, setelah kau berkelana 20 tahun menyusuri merahnya Moskow-Kanton-Shanghai-Bangkok-Manila-Hongkong, di-beri puja-puji sebagai “seorang yang pengaruhnya hampir-hampir seperti legenda” dan disebut-sebut “Indonesia’s No. 1 Communist” oleh People’s Age di tahun 1946, apa ceritamu tentang Belanda dan ubi jalar?
Lalu ia buka buku lusuh itu, yang dibikin di penjara rumah Madiun tahun 1948, sambil tersenyum. Di depannya tertulis judul: Gerpolek. Dengan hati-hati ia buka selembar demi selembar, khawatir buku tua itu robek. Barangkali sebelumnya ia tahu buku itu tak banyak dibaca orang. Dan ia tersenyum seseorang akhirnya ingin tahu. Terlihat ia membuka halaman akhir Bab XII Perang Politik-Diplomat:
